Allright, so help is on your way. Here is how you can can apply basic first aid to the person in need while you wait for emergency response to arrive. Not that it can take up to an hour for an ambulance to arrive, expecially at rush hour.

Stop bleeding

  • Apply Pressure: Use a clean cloth, bandage, or your hand to apply firm pressure directly on the wound.

  • Elevate the Injured Area: If possible, raise the injured limb above the level of the heart to slow the bleeding.

  • Use a Tourniquet: As a last resort, if the bleeding is severe and not stopping with direct pressure, you can use a tourniquet. Apply it above the wound, between the injury and the heart

Check for breathing

  • Clear the Airway: Gently tilt the head back and lift the chin to open the airway. Check for breathing.

  • Administer CPR if Necessary: If the person is not breathing, begin CPR. Give chest compressions at a rate of 100-120 per minute and provide rescue breaths if trained to do so.

Treat for shock

  • Keep the Person Warm: Use blankets, coats, or whatever is available to keep the injured person warm.

  • Elevate the Legs: If there are no injuries to the legs, elevate them to improve blood flow to vital organs.

  • Stay Calm and Reassure: Talk to the injured person, keep them calm, and reassure them that help is on the way.
